Slovenia is home to many waterfalls, most of them smaller in size, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t beautiful or worth visiting. The Alpine region is rich in water sources, and as a result, there are also many waterfalls. These waterfalls are often found in the most picturesque landscapes, making them ideal destinations for hiking trips. The following waterfalls are just a few of the many options you can choose from for a hiking excursion in Slovenia:
Savica
Located near Lake Bohinj, or a bit further beyond, is the Savica Waterfall. It is also the source of the Sava Bohinjka River, which flows into Lake Bohinj as the Savica stream. This waterfall is one of the most beautiful and picturesque in Slovenia. It is situated at an elevation of 794 meters, and the waterfall itself is 78 meters high. To reach the waterfall, you’ll need to hike about 140 meters in elevation, which can be done in a leisurely 20-minute walk. Definitely, this is one of the best options for a waterfall hiking in Slovenia. Read more and check out other activities there are close by on their website.
Rinka
Located in the Logar Valley, this waterfall is at a slightly higher elevation of 1,000 meters. The hike to the waterfall takes about 15 minutes of easy walking. It is considered the source of the Savinja River, after which the Savinja Valley is named. In winter, the waterfall freezes, offering stunning icy formations, while in spring and autumn, it has the highest water flow, making it most impressive to visit. Near the waterfall is the Orlovo Gnezdo mountain shelter, where you can refresh yourself with a drink while enjoying the view of the Rinka Waterfall.
Peričnik
In the Vrata Valley, you’ll find one of the most beautiful and famous waterfalls in Slovenia. The most interesting and attractive feature of this waterfall is that you can walk behind it, as there is a path that leads under the waterfall. In fact, there are two waterfalls close to each other: the lower and the upper. The lower waterfall is the larger one, standing at 52 meters, making it quite a sight to behold, while the upper one, at 16 meters, is smaller but still very beautiful and worth seeing. Both waterfalls are close to the road, and an easy, marked path will take you to them in about 15 minutes. Look at some of the photos on this link, where you can also read more about he waterfall.
Kozjak
At a much lower elevation of just 250 meters above sea level, you’ll find the Kozjak Waterfall. The waterfall itself is smaller, with just a 15-meter drop, but it is located in a stone amphitheater, which makes it truly special and mystical. It is well worth visiting, as the waterfall in this stone “hall” looks stunning and very photogenic. The hike to the waterfall takes about 25 minutes on an easy, marked trail. Boka
In the Soča Valley, the Boka Waterfall certainly catches the eye. It is the most water-abundant waterfall in Slovenia, and with its 144-meter height, it is sure to impress anyone. The waterfall is visible from the road, but it’s worth taking a walk to the viewpoint where you can see it much better. The walk to the viewpoint takes 15 minutes of moderate walking on an easy trail. The path starts on the right side of the bridge below the waterfall, on the road between Bovec and Žaga. Martuljek
These waterfalls are located above the Martuljek forest valley. The main attractions are two waterfalls, with the upper waterfall being the most spectacular, cascading down 110 meters in three stages. The hike to the waterfall is fairly easy but a bit longer, taking about an hour and a half with a 500-meter elevation gain. However, if you want to get right up close to the waterfall, the path becomes challenging and is suitable only for experienced hikers. The best time to visit the waterfalls is in spring when they are most water-abundant due to melting snow. Nearby is the “Pri Igotu” cabin, where they offer homemade food and drinks.
