Slovenia has as many as 321 lakes, scattered throughout the country. Different types and various lakes offer plenty to explore and see for everyone. You can embark on an adventure to lakes that are home to many different animal species, seek out stunning views, or perhaps you desire an alpine hike by the lakes. In the region of Slovenia, everyone can find something for themselves.
Here are, in my humble opinion, the six most beautiful lakes in Slovenia:
Lake Jasna
Located very close to the town of Kranjska Gora, near the road to the Vršič Pass. Although the lake is man-made, this does not detract from the natural beauty and surroundings. The water is a beautiful color, and the high Julian Alps form a stunning backdrop. Several accessible walking paths surround the lake. It’s also delightful to watch the fish calmly swimming in the waters.
You can read more on the Kranjska Gora municipality website.
Lake Bled
One of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, lakes in Slovenia. The lake’s lovely light blue colors are simply enchanting. Like something out of a fairy tale, there’s a small island in the middle of the lake with a church on top. The lake’s surroundings offer a plethora of activities; you can swim, walk, take a boat ride, or almost anything you wish, all while enjoying stunning views of nature and the surrounding hills. Pictures speak for themselves. Read more about activities and the history of the lake here.
Lake Bohinj
The largest permanent lake in Slovenia, naturally located in the heart of the Julian Alps. Near Lake Bled, just a few kilometers further, it also offers a lot. You can dive, sail, paddle, or swim. The warm air rising above the lake makes the area suitable for paragliding. For fishing enthusiasts, the lake is home to 22 species of fish, including the lake trout, burbot, and chub. Various accommodations are available nearby, such as hotels, holiday cottages, and a campsite. Close by is the lower station of the Vogel cable car, where you can view the high peaks of the Julian Alps.

Lake Cerknica
The lake is one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe. When full, it can cover up to 26 square kilometers, but during the dry season in the summer, it practically disappears entirely, leaving only a part that is artificially dammed.
It offers various activities such as hiking, cycling, canoeing, and fishing, though all of these depend on the water levels in the lake. The lake is also home to a wide variety of bird species. With at least 276 different species observed, representing about half of all bird species in Europe. This makes it an excellent destination for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Additionally, the lake is home to 45 species of mammals, which is half of the mammal species found in Slovenia. The biodiversity is truly remarkable.
You can read more about this lake and Mount Slivnica, which rises above the lake offering excellent views, in my other blog.
Lake Planšar
This heart-shaped lake was dammed by locals in memory of the large glacial lake after which the place was named. It is certainly the most attractive spot in the area and somewhat of a symbol. Walks to Lake Planšar from various directions are popular among locals and tourists. The inn by the lake offers good local food. The lake is accessible by road towards the border crossing, with a signposted turn-off. Even persons with reduced mobility can access Lake Planšar. The view extends to the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, which are beautiful from the Jezersko area.

Triglav Lakes
For hiking enthusiasts, Slovenia offers something exceptional: a hike in the Julian Alps along natural and beautiful Alpine lakes. The Triglav Lakes Valley is a glacial alpine valley between Bohinj and Trenta. Both the lakes and the entire Triglav Lakes Valley have been protected since 1924. The hike takes approximately 5 hours, so make sure you are well-prepared for the ascent. While there are several lakes in the valley, the seven lakes are mainly mentioned. You can read more here. It is worth noting the prohibition on swimming and other water activities. The water is clean and should remain so.
